Rôle des protéases dans le système nerveux entérique humain

Characterization of protease signaling in the human enteric nervous system in health and disease

Since the Master Thesis (2002-2004, University “Federico II”, Naples, Italy), my research has focused on Enteric Neuroscience. I started to study gastrointestinal function in animals using both in vitro and in vivo models. During the PhD and the first post-doc (Naples, Italy), I focused my research on human intestinal diseases, with focus on inflammatory diseases. This period was really lucrative, since I set up a technique to isolate primary glial cells from human tissue. In 2010, to further improve my scientific knowledge and technical skills (optical imaging and hard-core microscopy), I moved to Belgium, at KU Leuven, where we successfully set up a method to record from neuronal/glia cells activity in human samples. In 2012 I got 3-years fellowship, which has been renewed for 3 years more by the Flemish government (FWO), to study more in detail the functioning of human enteric nervous system in health and disease. I was awarded with a travel grant to spend 6 months (February-August 2015) at the INSERM under the supervision of Dr. Nathalie Vergnolle and nowadays I’m spending a second period in her lab to further decipher the protease signaling in the human enteric nervous system. In parallel, I’m the Principal Investigator of a granted research project (CREA – @ KULeuven) aimed at maintaining in culture human nerve tissue.
